USDT received on Tron: how to record it
Updated · 4 min read
In short
A USDT payment on Tron is recorded like any other stablecoin receipt, once it is solidified and confirmed as successful, and once the token is the genuine Tether contract. The sender pays the network cost. USDT's issuer and redemption terms differ from USDC's, so the classification is its own policy decision.
Why Tron shows up in US books
US exporters and service firms with overseas customers are often paid in USDT on Tron. Secondary summaries of Artemis, BCG and McKinsey data put Tron's share of real-economy stablecoin payments at roughly 60–80%, falling from about 74% to about 60% during 2025. Those figures are estimates, but the direction is clear: a business with international customers will see Tron.
Check the token first
| Token on Tron | Contract | Decimals | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDT (Tether) | TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t | 6 | Native TRC-20, listed by Tether |
| USDC (Circle) | TEkxiTehnzSmSe2XqrBj4w32RUN966rdz8 | 6 | Circle stopped minting in February 2024 and ended support |
Anyone can deploy a token called USDT. Look-alike tokens and zero-value transfers are sent to merchant addresses to plant a similar-looking address in the wallet history (address poisoning). A receipt from any other contract is a flag, not a payment. An inbound "USDC" on Tron deserves a second look too, because its issuer no longer supports it.
When the receipt is final
- Tron includes a transaction in about 3 seconds and treats it as solidified after 19 blocks, roughly a minute.
- Failed TRC-20 transfers, for example ones that ran out of energy, still appear in some listings. Only a transfer whose result is
SUCCESSand that is solidified has moved value. - Tron addresses appear in two forms, base58 starting with
Tand hex starting with41. They are the same address.
Who pays the fee
On Tron the sender pays for the transfer in energy and bandwidth, by burning TRX or using staked resources. The first transfer to a new address also costs the sender an activation fee. The receiving business pays nothing and has no fee to record on an inbound payment. If the customer's exchange deducted its withdrawal fee from the amount sent, the payment arrives short; that is a short payment against the invoice, not a network fee. See network fees.
The entry
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Dr USDT wallet (Tron) [classification per your policy] | 10,000.00 | |
| Cr Accounts receivable, Customer X | 10,000.00 |
Dated at the block time of the confirming block. In QuickBooks or Xero this is a payment on the invoice, so it closes.
USDT does not always trade at exactly $1.00. The USD value comes from a documented price source at the block time, and any difference from the invoice goes to the gain or loss account the accountant chose.
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Dr USDT wallet (Tron) [classification per your policy] | 9,990.00 | |
| Dr Loss on stablecoin settlement [account per your policy] | 10.00 | |
| Cr Accounts receivable, Customer X | 10,000.00 |
Some preparers carry a redeemable stablecoin at its $1 redemption amount instead. That is a policy choice, and the guidance is unsettled.
USDT is not USDC for classification purposes
Published guidance on stablecoins turns on the holder's rights: whether it can redeem with the issuer, on what terms, and what backs the coin. Tether's redemption terms (minimums, verified-customer requirements, fees) differ from Circle's and were not reviewed for this guide. The classification of a USDT holding therefore rests on its own facts, and may differ from the policy for USDC in the same books. See Is USDC cash? for the framework.
Tax-basis books
For federal tax, stablecoins including USDT are property. A receipt for goods or services is income at its fair market value in USD on receipt (Notice 2014-21). The receiving business's exchange may issue a Form 1099-DA for later sales; that is a broker obligation, not the business's.
Gladpaid watches Tron addresses read-only, waits for solidified, successful transfers, identifies tokens by contract and ignores look-alikes. To check one transaction now, paste its hash into the record a USDC payment tool.
Questions
What is the USDT contract address on Tron?
Tether's TRC-20 USDT contract is TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t, with 6 decimals. Tokens named USDT at other contracts are not Tether's.
Does the business record a fee when it receives USDT on Tron?
No. On Tron the sender pays the energy and bandwidth cost, so the receiver has nothing to record for an inbound transfer.
When is a Tron payment final?
When it is solidified, after 19 blocks or about a minute, and its result is SUCCESS. Failed transfers can still appear in some listings.
Is USDT classified the same way as USDC?
Not necessarily. Classification depends on the holder's redemption rights and the issuer's terms, which differ between Tether and Circle, so it is a separate policy decision for the accountant.
